Furnishing the State Library of New South Wales’s new chapter: customised, locally-made and delivered to the tightest timeframe.

A pillar of community, Australian public libraries are increasingly in demand. From an information archive, to remote working and group functions their purpose is expanding. Inside, furnishings become more than simply a place to sit—they are at the heart of spatial strategy, key to balancing harder, focused study zones with relaxed breakout spaces that encourage congregation.

Illustrating the breadth of Bowermans’ expertise, the products at our fingertips, and an ability to meet short lead times, our team worked closely with Cullen Feng Architects on the State Library of New South Wales’ Macquarie Building refurbishment.

Supporting the design vision

Designer of the original 1988 Macquarie building, Andrew Andersons AO and Cullen Feng Architects collaboratively redesigned the wing including the Bashir Reading room and café. Modernising previously fragmented spaces, the design connects visitors through a central, light-filled void that improves sightlines between levels.

Beyond aesthetics, the refurbishment increased capacity by 37 per cent with the help of Bowermans desks, laptop tables, café seating and casual gathering zones, ebbing and flowing between more rigid furnishings to softer organic forms. Showcasing durable, Australian-made furnishings with highly customised elements was central to the brief and meeting government standards.

Partnerships that streamline delivery

Harnessing Bowermans’ near limitless product library, established relationships with suppliers and decades of experience, Cullen Feng Architects engaged us to oversee a furnishing strategy that could both fulfill the design vision and align with challenging project timelines. This involved curating high-quality off-the-shelf items and partnering to provide customised, statement pieces.

The bespoke beauty of locally-made

Working between the Cullen Feng team and our manufacturers, Bowermans oversaw the development of bespoke furnishings that inject bold personality. In the foyer, a curved crimson sofa allows groups to lounge, face-to-face. A Cullen Feng Architects design, it includes a customised leg-shape and colour. Bowermans were hands-on in ensuring its development, evaluating shop drawings and colour palettes to get the details and structural elements just right. A high-traffic space, this sofa alongside, comfortable, red Bowermans’ armchairs, provides for pause or extended respite.

Detailing speaks volumes

Down to the details—patterns, palette and materiality—furnishings embody heritage and place. Chairs have been upholstered in textiles designed by contemporary Indigenous artist, Lizzy Stageman. Signifying rain drops and seasonality, the vibrant designs complement the blue and pink timber-slatted wall detailing, reminiscent of book spines.

Contemporary, modular furnishings are incorporated alongside a heritage palette of mocha browns across leather lounges, nodding to the Library’s 200-year-old history. Adding natural grains, beech wood Billani tables complement the slim-lined, versatile Bowermans oak seating in the café.

Bowermans is proud to have contributed to Cullen Feng Architects’ vision for the Library’s new chapter, extending this public resource and the building’s legacy. Meeting the expectations of a modern library we contributed design-forward pieces collaboratively, to budget and at pace. Uplifting the tone, comfort and purpose of spaces, the result accommodates conversation, concentration and everything in between.
